What to study

The codex as a fisherman's notebook, kept as a physical book. Each spread gives one species a full page built from the same blocks: an illustration, the habitat band in the same colour the cargo panel uses for its fish-type chips (COASTAL purple here), a caught count, a two-sentence naturalist's description, and a compact data block, where it lives (Stellar Basin, drawn as a palm-and-ruin pictogram), what it sells for, the trophy size on record (22.90 cm), whether it moves by day or night, and which gear can take it (Rod, Trawl, Pot). Underneath sits the book's horror twist, an ABERRATIONS strip: every species has a mutated variant, and the Firefly Squid's is drawn pale and glowing, a second collectable hiding inside the first. The facing page shows the system from the other side: entry #38 is a silhouette circled in red marker like a detective's evidence photo, its text replaced by '???', its status flag flipped to a red 'Not Caught', the unknown is typeset with exactly the same layout as the known, so ignorance has a shape and a page number. Navigation is worn on the book's edges: habitat bookmarks down the left, region and category bookmarks down the right (ending in Exotic and Aberrations), page-turn arrows keyed to Q and E, and a header that keeps the collection's scale in view, 'PAGE 19/115, Discovered: 59/230'.
