What to study
DREDGE's dialogue grammar in one frame: the speaker gets the centre of the screen as a full painted portrait standing in her own location, the Travelling Merchant on her pontoon at night, the player's boat moored behind her, while her words sit in a quotation-marked box at the bottom and everything you can say back is listed at the right. The choice list is doing quiet information design: the one option that advances something is pulled out of the stack, highlighted teal and badged with a green exclamation mark ('Do you need help with anything?'), the lore questions sit plain beneath it ('What can you tell me about Twisted Strand?', 'Do you ever see strange things out at sea?'), and leaving is given its own icon, a door, on 'I'll be going now.', a player can read the whole shape of the conversation, quest, colour, exit, before choosing anything. The sailing HUD refuses to fully leave during conversation: the clock still reads Monday, Day 8, 21:17 at top centre, because in DREDGE time is the resource every conversation spends, and tucked under the dial is the game's panic eye, here closed and green, the sanity system kept visible even in a friendly chat, so its later states (compare the open red eye in dredge-4) read by contrast. Frame at about 0:32 in the Launch Trailer (Steam), manually extracted at 31.9s: the pipeline's scene-change candidate at 31.4s caught the choice list mid-wipe with its fourth option half-erased, and at 31.9s all five options are settled and legible. No publisher burn-in, logo or caption appears in the frame; every element described is game UI.

Screen inventory
- the Travelling Merchant's large painted portrait at centre, a figure in a yellow beanie and maroon coat gripping her backpack straps, standing on her lamp-lit pontoon at night with the player's boat moored behind her
- the dialogue box along the bottom: name plate 'Travelling Merchant' and her line 'Hey again - come by for a chat?', framed by oversized quotation marks
- the choice list at right: the top option highlighted teal with a green exclamation badge, 'Do you need help with anything?', then 'What can you tell me about Twisted Strand?', 'Are you always out on the water?', 'Do you ever see strange things out at sea?', and an exit option 'I'll be going now.' with a door icon
- the top-centre HUD persisting over the conversation: clock dial 'Monday, Day 8 / 21:17', a compass, and between them the closed green eye of the panic indicator, shut and calm
- 'Back' and 'Continue' prompts at bottom right
