What to study

Inscryption's tutorial is a book that lives on the table, and this is how it teaches: not a tooltip, not a pop-up, but a printed appendix. The page is typeset like a clause in a contract - 'APPENDIX XII, SUBSECTION VI - ABILITIES 22' - and the whole of Worthy Sacrifice is one sentence of rules law: a card bearing this sigil counts as 3 Blood rather than 1 when sacrificed. The frame is composed as a lesson in progress: the player's own fingers hold a Bullfrog and a Squirrel over the open page, the Bullfrog's shield-shaped sigil sitting right there beside its power numeral, so the abstract entry and the concrete cards it governs are in the same glance. Even the set dressing is systems information - the gold teeth at the left edge are currency, the lanes behind are the battle in progress. The codex is a diegetic document: you look a rule up the way the fiction says you would, by opening the book. Frame at about 0:37 in the Inscryption - Trailer (Steam), manually extracted at 36.5s: the scene-change pass emitted no frame for the rulebook shot.

Screen inventory

  • the rulebook page filling the bottom half of the frame, headed like a legal text: 'APPENDIX XII, SUBSECTION VI - ABILITIES 22'
  • the entry heading 'WORTHY SACRIFICE' with its sigil icon - three blood drops - printed at left, and the full rule in one sentence: 'A CARD BEARING THIS SIGIL IS COUNTED AS 3 BLOOD RATHER THAN 1 BLOOD WHEN SACRIFICED.'
  • held above the page, the cards the entry is about: a BULLFROG (1 power, its shield-shaped Mighty Leap sigil printed beside the numeral, one blood drop cost) overlapping a SQUIRREL silhouette card
  • the player's fingers visible holding the cards over the book - the codex is consulted mid-game, at the table, not in a pause menu
  • at the left edge, two gold teeth lying on the table - the game's other currency, kept as physical objects; a bottled SQUIRREL card and the paw-print battle lanes show in the background at right
