What to study

A phone call, shown as a dialogue box with a face in it. Papyrus is not in this room; he is calling the player's CELL, and the interface marks the difference with almost nothing: the standard wide text box, a white pixel-skull portrait slotted into its left edge so the speaker is identified pictorially, and his dialogue set in his personal all-caps typeface, a different font per character being how this game does voice acting. The joke ('SO I COULD WEAR FOUR PAIRS OF HOTPANTS.', the punchline of a call about a spider he wants to impress) lands through typography alone. The frame also catches the game's layering honestly: the menu the player opened to reach the phone is still on screen at upper left, stat box ('LV 1', 'HP 20/20', 'G 936') and ITEM / STAT / CELL tabs stacked over a dark Waterfall shore, the call playing out on top of the menu that summoned it rather than in a dedicated call screen.
