What to study
The whole of Undertale's combat design in one black frame. Across the top, three monsters stand in a row, and each one is already talking: a white speech bubble beside every sprite ('Please don't pick on me.', 'Eat Your Greens', 'HEED THE SWARM'), because in this battle system the enemies are characters first and targets second, and their lines are the hints for how to end the fight without killing them. Below them sits the white-bordered bullet board with the small red heart, the SOUL, resting at its centre: when the enemy's turn comes, this box becomes a tiny bullet-hell arena and the heart is the only thing the player directly controls. The bottom strip never changes its grammar: LV 1, an HP bar with '20 / 20', and four orange buttons, FIGHT, ACT, ITEM, MERCY, each with a one-glyph icon. FIGHT and MERCY carry equal visual weight, same size, same row, which is the game's thesis expressed as layout: sparing is not a submenu of fighting, it is a co-equal verb. Frame at about 0:19 in the UNDERTALE Trailer (Steam), manually extracted at 19.3s: the montage holds this tableau for barely half a second inside a white wipe transition, and the scene-change pass caught only the zoomed heart graphic before it (16.3s) and the caption-covered dodge phase after it. Two trailer artifacts are disclosed: the letters 'TRA' at mid-left are the trailer's 'TRAVERSE...' caption mid-type-in, and the thin green grid across the upper field is a trailer production overlay; neither is game UI.
