What to study

Conversations here are narrated, not performed: a silhouetted Narrator delivers the scene in asterisked stage directions ('*The young woman squeezes her eyes shut in terror… The executioner raises his blade.*'), and the player's replies are written in the same register, things you do, not lines you say. Two of the four numbered options carry their mechanics in brackets: a [Constitution] insistence and an [Intelligence] appeal to Lucian are persuasion checks the interface names up front, so choosing one is a deliberate bet on a stat rather than a guess at tone. The other two options need no check and escalate the stakes instead, watch, or attack the Magister and start a fight from inside the conversation. The panel is a book laid over the live world: the platform, the kneeling girl and another NPC's bark ('We've done nothing wrong…') stay visible above it. Frame at about 0:30 in the Trailer video (Steam), manually extracted at 30.0s: the pipeline's scene-change pass emitted no frame for the dialogue segment (its nearest candidate, v0_0006 at 31.1s, is already the character sheet the trailer cuts to next).

Screen inventory

  • dialogue panel across the lower half of the screen, framed like a dark book page with red spine details
  • Narrator line at the panel's top, beside a silhouetted portrait: '*The young woman squeezes her eyes shut in terror, but says nothing. The executioner raises his blade.*', stage directions in asterisks, not spoken dialogue
  • the responding character's portrait (Lohse) beside four numbered replies, each written as an asterisked action line
  • attribute checks named inside the replies: '1. [Constitution] *Insist she's but a girl. She shouldn't be punished for her parents' wrongdoings.*' and '2. [Intelligence] *Exclaim that he's performing an injustice. Ask if Lucian would approve of this brutality.*'
  • options 3 and 4 escalate without checks: '*Stand back and watch the proceedings.*' and '*You can't let this scene continue. Attack the Magister.*'
  • the scene itself above the panel: the executioner's platform, the kneeling girl, speech-bubble markers over characters, and an ambient bark at top centre: 'We've done nothing wrong...'
  • party portraits cropped at the left edge and the minimap at top right, the conversation runs over the live exploration HUD, not a separate mode
