What to study

The manifest is the game's database, typeset as a ledger: each soul aboard gets one dotted row, number, name, role, origin, running in rank order from the mates, bosun and surgeon down through the carpenter, cook, butcher, gunner, purser and the ship's artist, until the passengers begin at the foot of the page. A fifth column, as wide as the name column, is ruled and left completely blank: that is where each person's fate belongs, and the whole game is the work of filling it in. The table is also a clue in itself, roles and origins are evidence (the gunner is Austrian, his mate Polish; the passengers include an artist, which explains the sketch bound into the same book), so the reference page the player consults most is designed to be read, not just searched. Two small triangular markers sit in the blank column beside the middle rows, the only visible cursor in an otherwise perfect imitation of print. Frame at about 1:35 in the Announcement video (Steam), manually extracted at 95.0s: the scene-change pass emitted no frame for this page at all. Caveat: the trailer scrolls down the manifest, so this frame shows rows 4-20 of 60; no single frame of the video holds the whole table.
