What to study

A person's fate is recorded not in a form but in a sentence the player completes: the page pairs an engraved portrait, captioned '1 Memory', the number of death scenes this face appears in, with a single handwritten line, 'This unknown officer was shot with a gun by an unknown attacker', and every load-bearing phrase in it is a slot. Small triangular markers bracket the editable words (who this is, how they died, with what, at whose hand), so the interface for the game's central deduction is literally grammar: get the subject, verb and object right and the sentence becomes a fact. In this frame every slot still says 'unknown', which is the honest starting state of the whole book, sixty of these sentences, all blank, waiting for the evidence the inspector gathers with the pocket watch. The panel sits over the open chapter pages (125 and 126 visible at the foot), keeping the entry inside the physical book rather than in a separate character screen. Frame at about 1:42 in the Announcement video (Steam).

Screen inventory

  • a framed fate page laid over the open book, whose hatched page numbers 125 and 126 show at the foot
  • an engraved portrait of an officer in a tricorn hat at the left of the panel
  • '1 Memory' caption under the portrait, the count of death scenes in which this person appears
  • the deduction written as one handwritten sentence: 'This unknown officer was shot with a gun by an unknown attacker.'
  • small triangular markers at the sentence's editable slots, the identity, the verb, the weapon and the attacker can each be stepped through
  • every slot still reads 'unknown': the deduction has not yet been made
  • the underlying chapter page header 'X. THE END' faintly visible at the top right behind the panel

Source details

Fetched 2026-10-20. verified 2026-10-20: frame extracted from the official Announcement video (Steam) and inspected visually at full resolution; genuine fate entry page confirmed settled (portrait, '1 Memory' caption and the full handwritten sentence legible, slot markers visible); no trailer text overlays the frame; the entry is entirely 'unknown', so the frame spoils no solved fate

no published policy found (checked 2026-10-20); fair-use study use, takedown honored within 48h, note: no Lucas Pope / 3909 video policy was located during this prep and a dedicated policy search was not run in this phase; flagged in review-notes.md for the ingest gate
