What to study

Into the Breach's whole design argument is on this one screen: the enemy's next turn is not hidden information but board furniture. Attacks are printed onto the tiles themselves, red striping under the buildings a Vek is about to hit, a dotted red line tracing a firing path across the middle of the 8x8 grid, red arrows cracking out of the ground where new enemies will emerge, so the player's turn is spent answering a plan they can already read. Around that board, the chrome is a study in compression: one top bar holds the shared Power Grid (four of seven segments lit) and the 15% Grid Defense chance; the left rail stacks the three pilot-and-mech cards with their health pips, and selecting the top card lights the same mech on the grid under a RALPH nameplate; the bottom-left panel gives the selected Lightning Mech's pilot portrait (Ralph Karlsson), its repair tool and its two weapon cards with their uses. The right rail states the contract, victory in 4 turns, the attack-order icon, and the two bonus objectives, and the bottom-right card names whatever tile the cursor rests on ('Building Rubble: No special effect.'), so even the terrain is interrogated through the same one-line tooltip. Nothing on screen is decorative; every element is a fact the next decision needs. Frame at about 0:15 in the Into The Breach - Announcement Trailer video (Steam), a pipeline scene-change survivor (candidates/v0_0001.png at 15.17s, copied to the workdir root as battle-grid-lightning-mech.png).

Screen inventory

  • top-left, the resource frame that never leaves the screen: a gear icon, the POWER GRID bar with four of seven segments lit orange, GRID DEFENSE 15%, and a greyed RESET USED tag; beneath it the two big turn buttons, End Turn and UNDO MOVE
  • left edge, the squad roster as three stacked pilot-and-mech cards, each with its own green health pips; the selected card (top) is outlined in yellow, and the grid agrees, the same mech stands selected on the board under a yellow tile outline with a RALPH nameplate and a three-segment green health bar over its head
  • the 8x8 board itself carries the enemy plan in the open: red-striped tiles under two buildings and beside the selected mech, a dotted red line of markers running across the middle tiles, and two cracked tiles at lower right sprouting red up-arrows where new Vek will emerge next turn
  • two Vek beetles sit mid-board on grey tiles, a friendly tank at right, green acid pools and water tiles closing the board's right and bottom edges, mountains walling the left, every tile type reads by colour and shape alone
  • bottom-left, the selected unit's full panel: Lightning Mech with move 3, pilot portrait and name (Ralph Karlsson), a repair wrench marked R, the lightning-whip weapon card marked 1, and a deployable-tanks card reading 'Uses: 1' marked 2
  • right edge, the mission frame: Victory in 4 turns, ATTACK ORDER with its initiative icon, and Bonus Objectives, 'Kill at least 7 Enemies (Current: 1)' and 'Protect the Coal Plant'; bottom-right, the hovered-tile card: 'Building Rubble, No special effect.'
