What to study

Songs of Syx's world layer refuses the usual strategy-map furniture: no province names, no legend, no side panel, a realm is a dashed line in a bright colour stepped along the tile grid, and a city is a tiny drawing of itself. The design lesson is trust in two encodings: colour for ownership, miniature for settlement. Everything a ruler needs at this zoom, whose land, where the towns are, what the terrain forbids, survives with zero text, which is what lets the map read instantly even though the simulation underneath it tracks thousands of individual citizens. Frame at about 0:31 in the Sacrifice of Bob (Steam; scene-change survivor v1_0010; the fine probe shows the map holding static from about 0:30 to 0:32, so this is the settled shot, not a pan).

Screen inventory

  • territory is drawn as colour, not chrome: stepped dashed border lines in cyan, magenta and orange follow the tile grid across open plains, each colour one realm, with no legend, labels or panel anywhere on the map
  • settlements are miniature walled-city renders sitting at their true map positions, a coastal fort, an island town, two inland capitals, so the map's icons are the cities themselves, shrunk, not symbols for them
  • dashed selection rectangles in red, green and orange pick out three settlements at once (top-left, top-centre, bottom-centre, the last with a small orange marker dot), the map's only concession to a cursor
  • terrain does the rest of the information work: a large inland sea at left, rivers, a dense forest block at right, snow-capped mountain ranges top and bottom, movement and wealth are readable from geography alone
