What to study

This is how Songs of Syx lets you draw a room: not a menu, but a ghost laid over the field, white blocks for walls that do not exist yet, a cyan dashed lattice for the floor tiles the room will claim, one red dashed slot for the fixture you are about to place. Because a Syx room is defined by its extent and its furniture rather than by a building type picked from a list, the placement tool has to make extent and furniture legible at once, and it does it with three colours and dashed lines alone. The trailer cuts through a run of these designations (about 0:34 to 0:39) and never once opens a panel: in this game, planning is something you draw on the land. Frame at about 0:35 in the Sacrifice of Bob (Steam; scene-change survivor v1_0013).

Screen inventory

  • the unbuilt room is pure linework: a perimeter of plain white wall blocks in an L-shape, drawn at full brightness over ordinary grass, so the plan reads before a single wall exists
  • the interior is divided by a cyan dashed grid with heavier cyan corner brackets on the boundary tiles, the grid is the room's tile count made visible, cell by cell
  • a single small red dashed rectangle inside the lower half marks a fixture position, the only red on the screen: planned furniture gets its own colour while the room is still a ghost
  • context is left natural at right, crop rows and three small roofed sheds, so the ghost's artificial colours carry all of the interface meaning; there is no panel, palette or text in the frame
