What to study

Reigns' core screen is a single binary decision with the entire state of the kingdom compressed into one strip: four faction icons, one request, one face, one checklist. Nothing else is on screen because nothing else is needed, the game removed every system that is not the choice. The settled card matters as the control frame for the set: compare it with the mid-swipe frame and the only things that change are the card's angle and the preview line, which is how the game teaches that the gesture IS the interface. Frame at 140s in the Gameplay video (Steam; manual extraction, scene-change detection returned nothing, see review-notes.md). The card screens are presented in the trailer as a central portrait strip with dark side bars (kept full-frame, not cropped).

Card Portrait

Screen inventory

  • the whole game is one portrait strip centred in the 16:9 video frame: at top, four faction icons in a dark bar, cross (church), figure (people), sword (army), coin (treasury), with the year 649 at top right and '3 years in power' at top left
  • the request sits above the card in plain typewriter text, 'There's a cholera outbreak in the capital! It's the Blue Death!', while the card itself is upright and centred, no swipe preview visible: this is the settled state, the moment before any gesture
  • the card is a flat faceted portrait on a green field, nameplate below reading 'John the Bold'; the portrait style is all hard angles and two-tone faces, no outlines, no shading gradients
  • at right, a three-item quest checklist, 'Win a duel', 'Lose yourself in the dungeon', 'Meet the devil', all unchecked, and at bottom left the king's name 'James': the long game (quests, dynasty) is always on screen beside the single decision
  • four dark squares at the bottom centre are the deck slots: the card in hand is one draw from a visible deck, not a full-screen menu
