What to study

Between kings, Reigns shows its real structure: a dynasty timeline in which each reign is one gold segment and the new king is just the next marker. The screen's job is to convert loss into continuity, the checked quest ('Recruit the doctor') crossing from Robert's reign into Edward's is the proof that nothing was wasted. As UI it is almost nothing (a line, a marker, a list, a button), and that sparseness is why it works: the timeline says the game is not about keeping one king alive, it is about how far the line gets. Frame at 50s in the Gameplay video (Steam; manual extraction).

Timeline List

Screen inventory

  • a single horizontal timeline crosses the full-width frame: gold segments for reigns already played, a red marker pinned at the year 640, and small crown icons marking the dynasty's kings along the line
  • the label under the marker reads 'Edward, 4th King', the new reign is introduced as a position on a timeline, not as a character: the dynasty is the protagonist, the king is its current entry
  • the same three red menu icons (castle, book, gear) sit at top centre, carrying the chrome over from the death screen so the run-end flow reads as one sequence, not two screens
  • the bottom band carries the quest checklist forward across the death: 'Win a duel' unchecked, 'Recruit the doctor' green-checked, quests survive their king, which is how the game makes a failed reign feel like progress rather than erasure
  • a NEXT button at bottom right is the only action: the timeline is a report to be read and dismissed, not a map to be navigated
