What to study

Reigns treats failure as bookkeeping, not spectacle. A run ends not with a game-over illustration but with a typeset verdict and a ledger entry: name, dates, NEXT. The restraint is the design lesson, after dozens of decisions, the game refuses to dramatise the one that killed you, and by reducing a reign to 'Robert the Wise, 632–639' it tells the player the real unit of the game was never the decision, it was the reign. The NEXT button is the loop made literal: one tap and a new king inherits the same four meters. Frame at 46s in the Gameplay video (Steam; manual extraction).

Screen inventory

  • unlike the card screens, this screen fills the whole 16:9 frame: no portrait strip, no pillarbox, the death of a king gets the full screen and nothing else
  • the verdict is set in oversized staggered type, 'The King is dead', with 'King' at roughly four times the size of the other words; the typography is the screen, there is no illustration of the death itself
  • three small red menu icons at top centre, castle, book, gear, the only chrome on the screen, and the only hint that this is a menu at all rather than an ending card
  • the bottom band records the reign like a tombstone: a skull icon, 'Robert the Wise', the years '632 - 639', and a NEXT button at right, eight years of decisions reduced to a name, a span and a single way forward
  • the preceding frame (about 44s) gives the cause in one sentence, leading the last remnants of the army and dying on the steps of the throne, but this frame deliberately withholds it: the death screen states the fact, the cause lives one screen back
