What to study

The same room that riots at Eat is a diagram at FreeTime. With the crowd gone, the canteen reads as pure furniture logic: bench rows sized to sittings, a serving counter that splits the room into queue and seats, tray stacks and cookers placed where the flow needs them - the room's design is the interface, and the game trusts you to read it without a single panel. The UI that does appear is all pointers and whispers: a one-word 'Bench' tooltip on the object under the cursor, a green outline tracing the selected row, and at the left edge a red circular marker pinned to the screen border, pointing off-screen toward a dropped contraband pill - an alert that works like a compass needle instead of a pop-up. Even the clock cooperates: where a schedule screen would be, the regime is just the word under the analogue clock, FreeTime, and the emptiness of the room confirms it. Frame at about 0:54 in the Prison Architect V1.0 trailer (Steam), a scene-change survivor (v0_0040).

Screen inventory

  • the canteen as a layout: rows of long tables and benches above, serving counters with tray stacks, cookers and bain-maries below, almost empty at FreeTime
  • a small black 'Bench' tooltip on the bench the cursor is inspecting at right, with a green selection outline running up the table row
  • a red circular contraband marker pinned at the left edge of the screen, pointing off-screen at a dropped pill
  • prisoners and guards as named figures (Stevenson at a table, The Fisherman and Cox below the wall), green information icons over the two jail doors
  • top bar: Todo list 2/13, DAY 22, $46,701 funds, $31,679 daily balance, 59/100 staff, 208/210 prisoners
  • analogue clock at top right reading FreeTime; the blueprint bottom toolbar and red Shakedown / Lockdown / Bangup buttons along the bottom
