What to study
Beside the port and open-sea frames, this one shows what Sunless Sea's map actually is: not a continuous coastline but a scatter of hand-drawn islands joined, here literally, by bridges, places as nodes, sailing as the edge between them. The design worth studying is how little the interface does to explain this: no route line, no destination marker, just the ship, its lamp, and a Log Book that records each arrival as a dated sentence with a fragment payout. The near-empty officer row is equally instructive, the roster widget communicates an early game by absence, six blank portraits where a late game shows a crew. Three frames, one HUD, three voyages: that consistency is the catalog value. Frame at about 0:18 in the Explore Trailer (Steam; exact seek at 18s).

Screen inventory
- the geography is the puzzle: Gaider's Mourn, a circular island fortress, is joined to a smaller spiral islet by two long plank bridges, with a third island (…NVADUS PILLAR) at frame left, the archipelago is drawn as connected places, and the ship sits mid-channel between them, so the route is visible before it is sailed
- the officer row shows an early voyage: only the captain's silhouette at far right is filled, the other six slots blank, qualities 26 / 26 / 25 / 25 / 30, crew 8/10, the same roster widget, nearly empty, which is how the game shows a run that has barely begun
- the top-left bars read a fresh ship: hull 80 / 100, fuel 12, supplies 13, terror low, compare the Odinson frame's worn numbers and the HUD becomes a run-history, not a static chrome
- the Log Book's two entries are both first discoveries, 'discovered Gaider's Mourn! (50 fragments gained)' and 'discovered Massey's Shaft! (50 fragments gained)', the game's habit of rewarding arrival with text and fragments, again in the same panel, in the same words
- the ship's wake and lamp glow are the only motion cues in a still chart: a green-lit speck with a trailing line, small against islands drawn at map scale
