What to study

This is Sunless Sea's core loop in one frame: sail into darkness with a lamp, and let the game pay you in named places. The light cone is the whole exploration mechanic, a vision radius drawn as a diegetic beam, and the HUD's job is to keep the costs visible while you use it: fuel 10, supplies 2, terror already red, hull 100/140. That the same frame that showed a port now shows open water with different officers and different numbers is the point: the interface never changes, only the voyage does, and the Log Book's dated discovery entries are the progress system. For a study of exploration UI, the lesson is restraint, one cone, one log, three bars, against a map that is mostly black. Frame at about 0:33 in the Explore Trailer (Steam; exact seek at 33s).

Screen inventory

  • the ship is a speck with a purpose: a long triangular light cone fans out ahead of it into black water, the only vision mechanic in the game made literal, you see exactly as far as your lamp reaches, and the cone's edge is where the map stops being known
  • the chart labels do the worldbuilding: ODINSON STRAITS lettered across the cone itself, PALE WASTES along a bone-white coastline at left, so region names arrive as cartography, not as loading-screen lore
  • the same HUD frame as the port shot, but its numbers tell a different run: hull 100 / 140, terror at a red dot on the skull bar, fuel at 10, supplies at 2, and a different officer row, a bearded officer in a flat cap and a bandaged captain silhouette among the slots, qualities 27 / 26 / 25 / 25 / 55, crew 8/12, the frame is identical, the voyage is not
  • the Log Book again converts sailing into story: 'discovered Hunter's Keep! (50 fragments gained)' and 'discovered Badstevener's Abyss! (50 fragments gained)', the reward for going somewhere new is prose and fragments, stated in the same breath
  • the sea itself is drawn as negative space: grey-green island blobs with sketched interiors float in black, unlit water rendered as nothing at all, so the chart reads as half-known by design
