What to study
Aperture's feedback language reduced to one bit: an orange dot-matrix panel and a checkmark. In co-op, these illuminated signs are how the facility answers the two robots, a blue X panel (shown at 0:43 in the same trailer) for no, this orange check for yes, with no words, no colour-blind ambiguity (shape and colour both change), and enough size to be read across a chamber at a glance. The panel is a physical object, not a HUD element: a metal frame, a gridded lamp face, grime worn into the corners, mounted on a corrugated wall. Portal 2's interface design keeps choosing objects over overlays, and this is the purest example, a whole communication channel carried by a sign. Frame at about 0:45 in the Co-op Trailer (Steam), manually extracted at 45.0s. Caveat: the Co-op Trailer is a pre-rendered piece, so this is the sign as Valve rendered it for the trailer rather than a gameplay capture; the sign itself is the game's co-op indicator artwork, complete and unobstructed. Screen type is a judgment call, the manifest has no signage bucket, so this diegetic display is filed under hud-gameplay as the nearest existing type.
