What to study
Before the pictograms, a chamber is introduced by its number. The 08 placard is a backlit white panel in thin outline numerals, the same corporate signage system as the pictogram panels, reduced to a room label, and in the ruined opening chapters it hangs tilted on a stained wall, still lit, still legible, while the floor below it has collapsed. A teal dotted indicator line (the chamber's wiring, in a plainer single-column form than the later panels use) runs up the wall beside it, past small test diagrams scratched into the tiles by an earlier occupant. The design lesson is in what survives: Aperture's wayfinding is high-contrast, oversized and redundant enough to keep working as set dressing in a disaster area, which is why these levels can be read at speed with no quest marker and no minimap. Frame at about 1:15 in the E3 Demo (Wheatley) video (Steam), manually extracted at 75.0s from a dense probe of the demo's chamber segment.
