What to study

The trailer's 'EMBRACE INFINITY' beat is a machine whose product will not fit on the screen. The PRODUCTS panel shows the goal in miniature, a long repeating strip of pale salt atoms bonded around green water atoms, and on the grid that strip runs in a straight row off the right edge of the frame, unit after identical unit. The actual machinery is small: at the chain's head, five numbered arms and two short tracks take the single REAGENT, one green water atom, and assemble each new unit onto the end of the line. The readout strip quantifies the joke: PRODUCTS 12/12 and COST 180G, but AREA 93, by far the largest footprint in the trailer, because an infinite product is measured in the space it consumes. This frame is also the only one where the left column's fourth section is headed GLYPHS, the panel scrolled past MECHANISMS (which here adds a 30G piston and a 5G berth plate) to the glyph tools, a reminder that the parts list continues below the fold of the editor. The five instruction tracks are the shortest programs in the trailer: a few tiles, looped forever. Frame at about 0:52 in the Opus Magnum Trailer (Steam), pipeline candidate candidates/v0_0013.png at 51.9s, copied unchanged (MD5 matches the candidate).

Screen inventory

  • a repeating product chain running off the right edge of the screen: a row of green water atoms (downward triangles) bonded between two rows of pale salt atoms, unit after unit
  • a small feed machine at upper left of the chain: five numbered arms (1 to 5) and two short tracks assembling each unit from a single green water REAGENT atom
  • left panel 'PRODUCTS' showing the full repeating chain diagram in miniature, a long strip of alternating salt and water atoms
  • the left panel's fourth section now headed 'GLYPHS' instead of the instruction palette header position, with MECHANISMS above it showing arms, a piston at 30G and a hexagonal berth plate at 5G
  • the readout strip reading 'PRODUCTS: 12/12', 'COST: 180G', 'CYCLES: ----' and 'AREA: 93'
  • five instruction tracks (1 to 5) of short repeating tile groups, the same few instructions looped
