What to study

The trailer's 'OR MAKE IT FASTER' beat, and the third state of the first puzzle kept alongside the other two: the first solution used three arms at COST 140G and AREA 37, the compact redesign used three arms at COST 150G and AREA 21, and this rebuild throws eight arms at the same product for COST 270G and AREA 36. More arms does not mean a better machine, and the readout strip makes that visible in one line: the cost nearly doubles the first solution while the area barely improves on it, and the price in programming is just as plain, six instruction tracks where the first solution needed three. As a study screen it completes the optimisation argument the other two frames start: cost, area and program length trade against each other, and a busier machine can be a worse one. Frame at about 35 seconds in the Opus Magnum Trailer (Steam), pipeline candidate candidates/v0_0007.png at 35.4s, inspected at full resolution (1920x1080); the eight numbered arms, the six instruction tracks, and the PRODUCTS 6/6 / COST 270G / AREA 36 readout legible; no trailer caption, watermark or logo overlays the editor.

Screen inventory

  • the first puzzle rebuilt a third time as a much busier machine: eight magenta arms numbered 1 to 8 in purple roundels, spread across the hex grid instead of the three arms of the first solution
  • a chain of dark berths running diagonally with reagent atoms seated along it, glyph plates engraved with triangles, and the assembled product molecule at upper right
  • the readout strip reading 'PRODUCTS: 6/6', 'COST: 270G', 'CYCLES: ----' and 'AREA: 36'
  • six numbered instruction tracks (1 to 6) filled with white instruction tiles in repeating groups, twice the programming of the first solution
  • the left panels unchanged in structure: PRODUCTS molecule diagram, REAGENTS air/lead/mercury atoms, MECHANISMS arms priced 20G/30G/30G/30G
