What to study
The journal in its hypothesis state. Every language in Chants of Sennaar is learned the same way: you see a glyph used in the world, you guess what it means, and the journal is where the guess lives until the game tests it. This page covers objects, four ink sketches, a key, a vase, a spiked oval mirror, a corked flask, and beside each drawing an empty dotted circle, the slot where that thing's glyph will go. Nothing is filled in yet, and the emptiness is the interface: the dotted circles are a to-do list drawn as absence, four nouns the player has met but cannot yet say. At the right of the book the whole known alphabet is laid out as a cluster of white glyph discs, four already black, and hovering one raises a black tooltip, 'UP/GREAT', the player's own tentative gloss, two candidate meanings kept side by side with a slash rather than forced into one word. The journal never asks the player to be right; it asks them to write down what they think, in a form the game can later grade. Frame at about 0:19 in the Chants of Sennaar - Launch Trailer (Steam), manually extracted at 19.4s: the journal beat runs about 18-20s as a page-turn sequence (a blank spread with the palette at 18.6s, this settled objects page by 19.4s), and the scene-change pass caught the corridor before it (17.0s) and the corridor after it (19.9s), no frame of the page itself. No trailer burn-in or watermark is present in the frame.

Screen inventory
- the open journal's left page: ink sketches of a large key and a rounded vase, each with an empty dotted circle beside it, a slot still waiting for its glyph
- the right page: a spiked oval mirror or sun sketch and a corked round flask, each also with an empty dotted circle beside it
- at right, the full glyph palette as a staggered cluster of white discs (about thirty glyphs), four of them already turned black at the cluster's lower right
- a black tooltip pill reading 'UP/GREAT' over one hovered glyph in the palette, the player's current guess shown as a two-word gloss with a slash
- two plain tabs at the top of the book, the left one gold with a small dome icon, the right one white with a dark obelisk-like icon
- the sunlit room behind the book kept dim and out of focus at the frame edges: shelves, jars and a doorway
