What to study
Sennaar's puzzles are machines that speak the local language, and this console states its problem in three registers at once. At the top, a yellow plaque carries two large glyphs, the written instruction, readable only if the player has done the journal work. Beneath it, a slider runs between a frowning face and a smiling face with its diamond knob parked right of centre, a mood or approval scale drawn as pure expression, no numbers anywhere. The lower deck is the input: five round sockets, four already holding white cylinders topped with small sculpted faces, every face a different expression, and a hand reaching for the one empty socket in the middle. The design move worth studying is that the console has no interface chrome of its own at all, no buttons, prompts or cursor; the slider, the sockets and the faces are physical parts of a magenta box in the room, and 'using the UI' means putting the right face in the right hole until the machine agrees with you. Language, emotion and mechanism are the same puzzle here: you cannot solve it by pattern-matching alone if you cannot read the plaque, and you cannot read the plaque without the journal. Frame at about 0:40 in the Chants of Sennaar - Launch Trailer (Steam), manually extracted at 39.8s: the scene-change pass caught the same console a third of a second earlier (candidates/v0_0020.png at 39.47s) with all five sockets still empty, before the face tokens were placed. No trailer burn-in or watermark is present in the frame.
