What to study
BATTLETECH's events are management decisions wearing a story's clothes. 'Coupling Unit' pauses the campaign timeline, the pause diamond stays on screen under the card, and presents a shipboard problem in three short paragraphs whose only highlighted word is a person's name: Behemoth, the pilot being volunteered for a risky spacewalk. The two choices are phrased as pure resource trades (lend the MechWarrior, or patch around the problem), and the card never hides the machine it interrupted: funds, the pending financial report and ship upgrade in the timeline stack, even the Weldry system panel all stay dimmed but readable at the edges. Narrative pressure and spreadsheet pressure arrive in the same frame, which is the whole mercenary-company fantasy in one modal. Frame at 1:08.3 in BATTLETECH Basics - Episode 2: Mercenary Life.

Screen inventory
- a centred event card over the dimmed Argo orbit view: painted header image of an engineer welding inside the ship, the title 'COUPLING UNIT', and 'WEEK 4 - DAY 6' at the card's top-right corner
- the body text, partly scrolled: a negative reading from a rotational assembly coupling joint near the reactor shielding, with 'Behemoth' highlighted in orange as the MechWarrior experienced with external ship work who is ready to attempt the fix
- two full-width choice rows with right-pointing chevrons: 'Allow Dr. Murad to borrow your MechWarrior' and 'Patch around the problem'
- the simulation layer still visible around the card: 'MASON'S MARAUDERS' and 'FUNDS: ₡2,230,000' at top, a TIMELINE (2) stack at right (FINANCIAL REPORT in 4 DAYS; ARGO UPGRADE: REPAIR SCAFFOLDING in 14 DAYS), the paused timeline diamond at bottom centre ('WEEK 4 DAY 6 / TIMELINE ADVANCING'), and the WELDRY system panel at bottom right with HIRING HALL / STORE buttons and the ORBIT - TRANSIT - JUMPSHIP route

Source details
Fetched 2026-10-23. verified 2026-10-23: frame is a scene-change survivor (candidates/v4_0023.png @ 68.27s) from the verified-clean curl-shim download of BATTLETECH Basics - Episode 2: Mercenary Life (Steam), inspected visually at full resolution; 'COUPLING UNIT' title, the welded-engineer header painting, both choice rows ('Allow Dr. Murad to borrow your MechWarrior', 'Patch around the problem'), the TIMELINE (2) stack and the WELDRY panel all legible; a fresh extraction at 68.27s from the canonical mp4 hash-matches this candidate at distance 0. Disclosed: the body text is caught scrolled a few lines into the message (its first line is half-clipped by the card's header rule), this is the settled choice moment as the source video presents it, confirmed against a 0.5s fine scan of 64-76s.
