What to study

The pickup is the whole interaction language: click a box, and the object comes out as a transparent purple ghost of itself, solidifying only when it is placed. Translucency does three jobs at once, it says 'not placed yet', it lets the player see the surface underneath while aiming, and it keeps a wrong position from ever looking final. There is no separate inventory screen to learn because the room, the boxes and the ghost are one continuous surface. Frame at about 0:52 in the Accolades Trailer (Steam; manual extraction, the drag holds for roughly half a second before the trailer opens the house plan; this trailer frames its rooms without the HUD chrome, disclosed here).

Screen inventory

  • the held object renders as a translucent purple ghost: a small case-like item floats in front of the television, see-through and tinted, with the white cursor arrow on its right edge, while carried, the thing is a preview of itself, and it only becomes solid when it is put down
  • nothing else on screen changes to accommodate the drag: no highlight ring, no valid-surface tint, no snap grid, the room stays in its ordinary colours and the player judges fit by eye against the real furniture
  • the source of the drag sits in the foreground: a stack of cardboard boxes, one open and emptied, items come out of the boxes in the room, not out of a menu, so the box pile shrinking is the progress bar
  • the room around the gesture is the same living room the floor-plan and album frames show, dressmaker's dummy, sewing table, terrarium shelf, a space already mostly placed, which makes the single ghosted item read as the one undecided object
