What to study

Unpacking's main screen argues that a puzzle game needs almost no interface at all: an album icon, a camera, two zoom magnifiers, and, at the frame edges, the neighbouring rooms drawn as single pieces of furniture with arrows. There is no inventory bar because the cardboard boxes in the room are the inventory, and no text because every control is a picture of the thing it opens. The one active element is the toaster floating at the cursor: carrying is shown by the object itself, mid-air, waiting to be judged. Frame at about 0:76 in the Launch Trailer (Steam; scene-change survivor v0_0008).

Screen inventory

  • the whole HUD is six small pixel icons and not one word: top left, an album book with a pencil and a camera; top right, zoom-in and zoom-out magnifiers; nothing else is drawn over the room, no score, no timer, no item counter
  • room travel lives on the screen edges: on the left margin a bed pictogram with a left arrow (the bedroom is that way), on the right margin a fridge pictogram with a right arrow (the kitchen), each neighbour room is advertised by one piece of its furniture, never by a room name
  • the placement itself is caught mid-gesture: a cream toaster hangs in the air beside the toilet-roll holder with the white cursor arrow riding its corner, the object in hand is the only thing the interface highlights, and it is fully opaque, exactly as it will look when set down
  • the bathroom underneath is finished and lived-in, towels hung, bottles on the bath rim, two rolls stacked on the cistern, so the frame shows the HUD doing its quietest job: staying out of the way of a completed room
