What to study
Roadwarden fights without a combat screen. The encounter is written, not staged: the monster is described in a sentence, and the player's whole tactical vocabulary is six first-person sentences, dodge, swing wide, aim for the head, rush in, hamstring, sever the grappling arm, each a different risk posture stated as intent, not as a stat. The layout makes the genre contract visible: illustration at left for atmosphere, prose and choice in the centre because choosing is the only mechanic, and the same text menu and icon rail at right on every screen, so combat never gets its own interface, it borrows the dialogue screen's. Frame at about 0:01 in the Release Trailer (Steam; manual extraction, the narrative line is still typing out at capture, but all six options are complete and legible).

Screen inventory
- the centre column is prose above a rule, then six first-person options in plain text, 'I focus on dodging its charge', 'I jump away and take a wide swing', 'I'll finish it off with a single cut', 'I jump forward and strike without thinking', 'I'll slow it down by cutting its legs', 'If it tries to grapple me, I can cut its arm', no attack button, no damage numbers, no target reticle: the fight is a paragraph with a menu under it
- the left panel is the scene itself, an isometric pixel clearing of rock, dead trees and a huge gnarled tree, with no character sprite and no enemy on screen, the monster exists only in the text ('a furless, gray, wrinkled human with stunningly long limbs'), so the panel is illustration for the prose, not a battlefield to read
- the right column is the game's permanent furniture, identical on every screen: a text menu (Character, Inventory, Wait, Map, Seek Shelter above Settings, Q. Save, Q. Load, Archive, Journal) over a column of small status icons, a star, a heart, a half-filled circle, a shirt, a compass-like star, a spiral, each a system (health, gear, reputation) reduced to one glyph
- the top edge carries a thin icon strip (a coin, a pack, a horn, a figure) that reads as carried equipment and party state, kept out of the way above the scene panel
