What to study
Kenshi's character creator treats a person as two documents: a story and a spreadsheet. At left, the story, Stork, a Human Scorchlander, her people's description written as ethnography, all freedoms valued and religions distrusted, and directly beneath it, the spreadsheet the story costs: +20% to stealth, smithing and dodging, -20% to farming and cooking, because in Kenshi a heritage is a set of aptitudes for labour. At right, the body itself becomes seventeen numbered sliders, height 98, posture 20, leg length 102, adjusted with the same flat seriousness as the stats, while the character waits on a wooden platform in empty desert. There is no class, no destiny, no chosen one: the game's whole thesis is stated before the first step is taken, you are a set of trade-offs, standing in a wasteland. Frame at about 0:12 in the Kenshi - v1.0 Release Date Announcement Trailer (Steam; scene-change survivor v1_0001).

Screen inventory
- identity is picked from plain cycling rows at left: the name 'Stork', RACE Human, SUBRACE Scorchlander, GENDER Female, each with arrow steppers, plus IMPORT / EXPORT buttons, a CLOTHES toggle and a CHANGE CHARACTER 1/1 pager, a character is a file you can save, share and reload, like a build
- the RACE DESCRIPTION prose box does the worldbuilding ('Scorchlanders tend to value personal freedoms above all else. They don't tend to get along well with rules, regulations and religions… natural born traders and skilled weapon smiths') while RACE STATS directly beneath prices the choice in percentages: Hit Points 100, Dexterity +10%, Athletics / Stealth / Armour Smithing / Weapon Smithing / Dodging +20%, Farming / Cooking / Labouring -20%, every subrace a trade-off table
- the right panel is a body workshop: BODY / FACE / HAIR tabs over seventeen labelled sliders with numeric readouts, Idle stance 8, Skin Tone 6, Height 98, Frame 89, Posture 20, Shoulder set 69, Neck position 35, Leg length 102, Shoulders 104, Arm bulk 96, Hands 108, Chest 101, Waist 100 among them, with RANDOMISE ALL / RANDOMISE / RESET at the foot; proportions are numbers, tuned like stats
- the character stands on a wooden platform in open desert between the two panels, no backdrop, no beauty lighting, the wasteland itself as dressing room, and the CONFIRM button waits at lower left: there is no class pick and no destiny screen after this one
