What to study

FFXIV's character creator is a list, not a sculpting bench: twenty-one named attributes run down the left as plain text, Height, Tail Shape, Tail Length, Face, Skin Color, Hairstyle, Hair Color, Jaw, Eye Shape, and on to Voice, and picking one opens its control at the right edge, here the hair-colour swatch grid with the previous and current colours quoted as raw RGB triples (49,74,125 giving way to 125,95,59). Nothing is hidden behind tabs or sliders-within-sliders; the whole shape of a character is visible as a table of contents before you touch anything, and race-specific anatomy (this Miqo'te's Tail Shape and Tail Length) simply takes its place in the same list. The preview does the persuading: the character stands in a real field under the ENVIRONMENT backdrop thumbnails at lower right, with POSE and ATTIRE radios beside them, so you judge the result in the world's light rather than a studio void.
