What to study

Late in the trailer the grid dissolves: panels become physical prints that can be layered, and the drop shadows sell the fiction that you are handling pictures, not windows in a UI. Layering is a distinct move from placing, the gear medallion does not replace the castle wall, it sits on it, and the sun gear bridges two halves of the wall panel at once. The embroidered cushion is the game's quietest joke and its clearest self-portrait: even inside the fiction, the four-panel grid is the emblem of how this world is read. Frame at about 1:05 in the Launch Trailer (Steam), fine probe fine/launch_four_07.png at ~65s.

Screen inventory

  • panels no longer sit in the 2x2 grid: they overlap like prints on a table, each casting a soft drop shadow on the panel beneath
  • left: a golden gear medallion with four round portrait insets overlaps a castle-wall panel; its smaller sun gear crosses the seam between the wall panel's own halves
  • top-centre: an ornate green eye panel overlaps the red armchair panel below it; on the chair sits a cushion embroidered with a tiny four-panel grid, the board depicting itself
  • top-right: a stone hand offers a white fruit above the blue bowl, in a panel that overlaps nothing and keeps its full border
  • bottom-right is open drafting sheet: the stack is a work in progress, arranged by hand rather than snapped to slots
