What to study

The Westwood sidebar, the interface this collection exists to preserve: real-time strategy production pulled out of the world and into one permanent right-hand column, so building never pauses or covers the battle. The remaster keeps the 1995 arrangement exactly, credits on top, minimap under them, then the build grid, and spends its new fidelity inside the cells: where the original used small flat icons, every structure is now a painted cameo portrait with its name printed underneath, fifteen of them readable in this single frame, from Sandbags and Chain Link Fence up to the Adv Comm Center and Helipad. The four pictogram tabs above the grid (structures, infantry, vehicles, superweapons) are the whole production taxonomy, and the segmented bar down the column's inner edge turns base power into a fuel gauge. The design wager is visible in the frame's split: the left three-quarters stay pure battlefield, GDI armour, selection brackets showing, is mid-assault on a walled Nod base, because the sidebar's permanence is what makes continuous command possible; you order a Refinery the way you glance at a dashboard, without leaving the road. The trailer's other sidebar states underline the point by contrast: the same column appears with its grid emptied to a single superweapon cell (Nuclear Strike here, Ion Cannon in Red Alert's orbit) once a base is fully built. Frame at about 1:12 in the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection Official Reveal Trailer video (Steam), a pipeline scene-change survivor (candidates/v1_0018.png at 72.16s, copied to the workdir root as sidebar-build-ui-tiberian-dawn.png).

Screen inventory

  • the battlefield takes the left three-quarters: a GDI armoured group, tanks wearing white selection brackets and green health bars, assaults a walled Nod base, red power plants, the Hand of Nod and an airstrip behind concrete walls, so the screen being studied is a live fight, not a paused build phase
  • the sidebar's stack is fixed and legible top to bottom: credits (3821) in green numerals, the minimap, red and gold forces, twin viewport brackets, then a utility row (repair wrench, sell $, map) and four category tabs with pictogram icons for structures, infantry, vehicles and superweapons
  • the build grid itself: three columns of painted cameo portraits, every cell named in text beneath its picture, Power Plant, Sandbags, Chain Link Fence, Concrete Wall, Refinery, Adv Power Plant, Barracks, Repair Facility, Weapons Factory, Comm Center, Silo, Adv Guard Tower, Adv Comm Center, Guard Tower, Helipad, fifteen structures deep before the first empty slot
  • a vertical segmented power bar runs down the sidebar's inner edge, green shading into yellow, the base's power budget rendered as a fuel gauge that never leaves the player's peripheral vision
  • nothing is modal and nothing is hidden: production, money, map and power share one permanent column, and the battlefield is never covered by the act of building
