What to study

Wildermyth's signature screen: a story decision presented as the bottom row of a comic page. The wide panel states the problem, and each choice below it is not a line of text but a small panel that previews the fiction it commits you to, Fight! shows the stand, Hide! shows the cowering, so the player chooses between two drawn futures, numbered 1 and 2 in the corner folds. Because the options are pictures in the same style as the scene above them, choosing never breaks the storybook surface: the interface is the comic, and the comic is the interface. Frame at about 0:22 in the Launch Trailer (Steam; manual filmstrip extraction, the settled page holds between the trailer's scene cuts).

Screen inventory

  • the page is built like a comic: one wide establishing panel across the top, Malloc with his ladle and spellbook, Cora with her pitchfork, facing the flaming Roe and a blue spirit beast in a burning barn, set in a white border on a teal, leaf-patterned page ground
  • the choice itself is two smaller panels along the bottom, each a drawn preview of the branch it starts: panel 1, captioned 'Fight!', shows the pair squaring up to both beasts; panel 2, captioned 'Hide!', shows them ducking behind the wreckage while the Roe prowls past
  • each option panel carries its number in a folded corner tab (1 / 2), the keyboard shortcut is printed as part of the page furniture, not as a button chrome
  • there is no dialogue box, option list or highlight state anywhere: the only text on the page is the two one-word captions, because each choice is legible as a picture before it is read as a word
