What to study

In play, Tape to Tape borrows television's grammar wholesale: a single score bug at bottom centre carries score, period, clock and even the win condition (first to 5 goals), while the only other persistent element is the controlled skater's portrait chevron at top-left with its two ability icons. Control is marked twice, chevron and an on-ice face marker, and everything thematic is delegated to the rink art, so the HUD never competes with a very busy cartoon match. Frame at about 1:15 in the Official 1.0 release trailer video (Steam), a pipeline scene-change survivor (candidates/v0_0026.png at 74.6s).

Screen inventory

  • bottom centre: a broadcast score bug, team crests and abbreviations (PRI 0, 1 GM), period and clock (1st, 1:51), and the match rule itself printed on the bug: FIRST TO 5 GOALS
  • top-left: the controlled skater's chevron holds their portrait and two ability icons, one lit and one greyed, the active player and their cooldown state without a separate player frame
  • the controlled skater on the ice carries a blue marker with their face icon, matching the chevron; everyone else is unmarked, so possession and control read instantly at speed
  • the rink itself is the away team's identity: The Penitentiary's mugshot logo at centre ice, a prisoner in ball-and-chain at the blue line, the HUD stays neutral broadcast chrome while the ice does the theming
