What to study

Shadow Tactics has almost no HUD, so its view cone has to do the work of one, and it does it as pure ground paint. A guard's sight is a single translucent green wedge with its point at his feet: where he looks is a coloured shape in the world, wide, flat and impossible to miss, and the grass inside it brightens as if lit. Nothing competes with it. There is no portrait bar or ability row in this frame at all; the player reads the tactical situation, who watches what, where the blind ground is, entirely from wedges like this one and the coloured uniforms inside them. Later stealth-tactics games inherited the cone wholesale; this is the frame that shows why it needed no improvement. Frame at about 0:26 in the Gameplay Trailer 2 (Steam; manual extraction, the shot is one long held pan, so the scene-change pass never fired inside it).

Screen inventory

  • the view cone is one flat translucent green wedge laid on the grass in front of the large house: its apex sits at the guard standing by the loaded cart at frame right, and its wide end reaches the fence line, vision is a shape on the ground, not a line or an icon
  • inside the cone the grass renders brighter and flatter than the yard around it, so the watched ground can be picked out at a glance even where the wedge crosses carts, sacks and shadow
  • there is no HUD chrome anywhere in frame: no portrait bar, no ability row, no minimap, the cone and the small figures moving around it are the entire interface
  • three patrolling guards in blue stand outside the cone at frame right, readable only by uniform colour and the spears they carry; the cone's owner is the fourth, half hidden behind the cart he watches from
  • the yard the wedge crosses is dense diorama detail, a cart piled with covered bodies, barrels, a red strongbox against the far fence, and the green still reads cleanly over all of it
