What to study

This is the view cone's complete grammar in one frame. Solid purple is certain sight; the striped bands inside the same fan are where cover, bushes and shadow break the line, the cone keeps its true length and changes texture instead, so the player learns 'watched' and 'watched-but-shadowed' as two fills of one shape. The design also survives the night palette: everything else in the frame sinks to dark green and brown, and the fan stays violently violet, the first thing read in any night scene. Above it, the prone figure on the aqueduct states the intended answer without a word of tutorial, the way past a cone is over it. Frame at about 2:28 in the Gameplay Trailer 2 (Steam; scene-change candidate v0_0010).

Log

Screen inventory

  • the view cone is a broad purple fan filling the left half of the frame, thrown by the robed guard standing at its apex beside the log pile, at night the cone turns violet and becomes the brightest object in the scene
  • the fan reads in two textures: solid violet where the ground is open, tight dark stripes where it crosses the bushes and the fence shadow at frame left, blocked sight is drawn as striping inside the same shape, never as a shorter cone
  • three guards in green-yellow vests stand with their backs to the camera inside the fan's edge, lit in the game's highlight colours while the robed figure they face stays in purple shadow
  • above them, one of the player's characters lies flat along the wooden aqueduct that cuts diagonally across the frame, the route over the guards' heads is drawn in the same picture as the cone it avoids
  • there is no HUD at all: at night the game trusts the cone's colour contrast alone to carry the tactical read
