What to study

Outer Wilds puts its most important status screen inside the fiction: the ship's dashboard is a set of physical instruments, and its left monitor, bezel-labelled 'DAMAGE', draws the ship itself as a green schematic, components filled in green while they are intact, with leader lines naming each part and a pink 'MASTER ALARM' lamp lit at the corner. A pilot reads the state of the whole vessel from one picture of the vessel, no hit-point numbers anywhere. Around it the same philosophy repeats: a cross-shaped thruster indicator whose markers light as the thrusters fire, a round 'TEMP' gauge, three plain dome lights, and a wide centre screen that stays dark until a tool needs it. The frame also shows why the system works in play, the dashboard occupies only the bottom edge of the windshield, so the observatory and telescope the player is about to visit fill the view above it. Frame at about 0:59 in the Outer Wilds | Reveal Trailer (Steam), pipeline candidate v1_0003 at 58.95s; it is the clearest of roughly eight cockpit shots across the two Steam trailers.

Screen inventory

  • a diegetic monitor at the bottom-left of the cockpit, labelled 'DAMAGE' along its lower bezel, drawing the ship as a green line schematic seen from above and the side
  • ship components picked out in solid green on the schematic, with one orange square icon near the centre and a yellow warning triangle below it; thin leader lines run from each component to small labels at the panel's edges
  • a pink lamp lit at the monitor's top-right corner reading 'MASTER ALARM'
  • a cross-shaped thruster indicator between the two screens, two of its markers lit orange
  • a wide, blank dark-blue screen at the centre of the dashboard
  • three small dome indicator lights (blue, teal, white) to the right of the centre screen, with a round gauge labelled 'TEMP' beneath them
  • through the windshield: the Timber Hearth observatory, its large telescope angled up at the right, the launch tower and crater forest ahead
