What to study

This is the battle as its commander audits it: one keypress (the end-of-battle state of the same panel says 'press tab to view results') replaces a hundred individual fights with two facing ledgers, attackers and defenders, every troop type reduced to a row and every outcome to a number under a pictogram. The design discipline is what the panel refuses, no names for its columns, no modal chrome, no pause in the fighting behind its smoked glass, because the question it answers is asked under time pressure: who is winning, and which of my troop types is paying for it. A disclosure the frame itself makes necessary: this panel is from the Gamescom 2016 demo build, six years before release, the two-ledger idea, the icon columns and the party-headed rows all survived into the shipped game's battle results, in a rearranged form. Frame at about 3:18 in the Gamescom 2016 Siege Defence Gameplay video (Steam; scene-change survivor v1_0005).

Screen inventory

  • the whole battle is one translucent ledger laid over the fighting: Attacker Army on the left, Defender Army on the right, each headed by its party, Achios's Party for the Imperial attackers, Eithne's Party and a Dunglanys garrison row of zeros for the Battanian defence
  • the columns have no words at all, only pictograms, a skull, a shield with a lightning bolt, a raised weapon, a standing figure, a sword, a chevron, six outcome counts per troop type that a player learns to read at a glance mid-battle
  • every troop type is a row with its own small figure icon: Imperial Bowman 10, Imperial Light Infantryman 29, Imperial Horseman 17 on one side; Battanian Longbowman, Battanian Yeoman Longbowman (48 in the last column) and Battanian Heavy Infantryman 15 on the other, the siege's story is legible in which rows are long
  • the panel stays a guest in the battle: the field and fortifications show through its dark glass, a red-and-green army balance bar runs along the very top edge of the screen, and a short row of filter buttons sits at the panel's bottom centre

The pipeline flagged v1_0007 (363.53s) as similar-band to this frame, checked visually: the same panel in its end-of-battle state with final totals and a 'Battle won' toast, held as an alternate rather than a second keeper
