What to study

Shopping in Gloomhaven is reading cards, the same card object the game uses for attacks and equipment, dealt out in front of the man selling them. Because every card prints its full rules text, its slot icon and its price in the same positions, the shop needs no cart, no basket and no detail page: eight goods can be compared at a glance, and the comparison is tactical, not economic (10 gold for Hide Armor against 30 for the Eagle-Eye Goggles matters less than Advantage 'on the entire Attack action' against a shield that works once). The prices also quietly set the campaign's scale, these 10-to-30-gold goods are the same shop the Spellweaver visits carrying 9,870 gold, so the screen is a record of early-game scarcity preserved in a rich party's trailer. The merchant's grin behind the cards is the oldest shop interface there is: a person, and their wares spread on the counter. Frame at about 2:02 in the Gloomhaven - Gameplay Trailer (Steam; manual extraction, the scene-change pass missed the shop entirely; it sits inside a held montage shot).

Screen inventory

  • the shop is eight full item cards in two rows of four, laid over the merchant himself, a smiling, open-handed trader in a green tunic standing in his market tent, used as the shop's living backdrop rather than reduced to a portrait in a corner
  • top row: Poison Dagger 20 ('During your melee attack, add POISON to a single attack'), Piercing Bow 30 ('During your ranged attack, ignore all Shield values for the entire Attack action'), Heater Shield 20 ('When damaged by an attack, gain Shield 1 for the attack'), Leather Armor 20 ('The next two times you are attacked, the attacker gains Disadvantage on the attack')
  • bottom row: Hide Armor 10, Cloak of Invisibility 20 ('During your turn, gain INVISIBLE'), Iron Helmet 10 ('When attacked, consider any x2 attack modifier card the enemy draws to be a +0 instead'), Eagle-Eye Goggles 30 ('During your attack, gain Advantage on the entire Attack action')
  • every card shares one anatomy: name, a slot icon in a black circle (hand, fist, helm, body), the price in gold coins at top-right, item art, and the rules text, and the rows are colour-coded, deep red for hand items, blue-grey for armour
  • small icons in each card's bottom-right corner mark its use and loss state, and the armour cards add an infinity-and-starburst strip counting their uses, the shop's whole stock can be compared without opening a single card
