What to study

Character management is a three-column master-detail that never changes its grammar: who (the party stack at the left, each mercenary with their own gold, 9870 for the Spellweaver, 10030 for the Tinkerer, because in Gloomhaven gold belongs to characters, not the party), what they wear (a slot list in body order, locked slots shown as padlocks rather than hidden), and what this thing does (the item opened as a full card, in the same card format the game uses for abilities and shop goods). The telling line is the smallest one: 'Bound to the Spellweaver'. Items in Gloomhaven are bound to the character who bought them, and the interface states that ownership on the card itself, under the rules text, a multiplayer bookkeeping rule from the board game, surfaced exactly where a player about to hand the hammer to someone else needs it. Frame at about 0:59 in the Gloomhaven - Gameplay Trailer (Steam; manual extraction, the scene-change pass caught the same screen a half-second earlier, before the War Hammer card had opened).

Screen inventory

  • far left, the party column stacks character cards: Spellweaver (Gold: 9870, Level 1, XP 0/45) lit and selected, Tinkerer (Gold: 10030, Level 1) dimmed below; above them the campaign itself reads Reputation 2 and GH Wealth 1
  • centre-left, equipment is a slot list in body order, Head Item: Eagle-Eye Goggles; Body Item: Hide Armor; Hand Items: Heater Shield and Hand Item 2; Legs Item; Small Item 1; and Small Item 2 shown padlocked as 'Locked'
  • centre-right, the owned-item list, Battle Axe, Black Knife, Heater Shield, Piercing Bow, War Hammer, with War Hammer highlighted, answering the selected Hand Item 2 slot across the gutter: slot, list and card are three columns of one gesture
  • right, the highlighted item opens as a full item card over the parchment world map: War Hammer, 30 gold, 'During your melee attack, add STUN to the entire attack action', with the ownership line 'Bound to the Spellweaver' beneath it
  • the screen never leaves the campaign: the hand-drawn world map stays visible at the right edge behind the card, so managing gear is a layer laid over the map, not a separate place you travel to
