What to study

Each Gears class grows as a four-armed skill web, and this screen lays the whole decision out at once: two specialisations per side (for the Sniper, Marksman/Assassin against Hunter/Stalker), 18 nodes joined in a symmetric lattice, points available and points spent counted in the header, and the highlighted node's effect written out in full sentences in the side column, range thresholds and all. The design lesson is legibility of a build: because the tree, the roster and the unit's own skill list share one screen, a player can see who a point changes, what it buys and what it costs (including the 1-point full respec) without leaving the Barracks. Disclosure: this montage is only ever shown under the trailer's counting caption, a large “79 SKILLS TO UNLOCK” burn-in covers the bottom-right corner of this frame, over the character model's legs and the skills panel's lower edge; the tree, roster and Sharpshooter card are completely unobscured. Frame at about 1:17 in the Gears Tactics Launch Trailer - ENESRB (Steam; manual extraction, the scene-change survivor of this montage, v0_0045 at 76.29s, is crossed by the same caption at its largest, “0 SKILLS TO UNLOCK”; this frame is a later unit in the same montage, caption shrunk to the corner).

Screen inventory

  • the same Barracks shell, drilled in: a ROSTER ▸ MIKAYLA ▸ SKILLS breadcrumb, the roster column still at left (GEARS [6/14], heroes marked AVAILABLE, TROOPS [1/9] below) so a tree is never edited without the rest of the squad in view
  • the centre SKILL TREE panel is a symmetric four-branch web, Marksman and Assassin to the left, Hunter and Stalker to the right, built from hexagonal icon nodes joined by thin lines, each node carrying a small rank number (1/2/3); unlocked nodes glow teal, the selected node burns white, and the header prices the build plainly: 2 POINTS AVAILABLE, 1 / 18 UNLOCKED
  • the right SKILLS column names what the web means: LEVEL 2 SNIPER MIKAYLA DORN with her XP line, then the selected node's full card, SHARPSHOOTER, Passive Skill, “this unit gets a reduced Accuracy penalty with its primary weapon when targeting enemies that are 8 or more meters away. This unit gets increased Critical Hit Damage.”, prose rules, not just an icon
  • the footer keeps the experiment cheap: [ESC] BACK and [F2] RESET SKILLS with a respec cost of 1, so a tree is a draft, not a commitment
