What to study

Gears Tactics runs its squad management as a personnel file. The Barracks roster separates the named heroes (Gears, with stars) from the generated recruits (Troops) in one scrollable list, and selecting a soldier splits the screen three ways: the roster stays put, a compact stat sheet prices the unit (health, damage, crit, ammo, evasion, the whole combat value of a person in seven icon rows), and the soldier himself stands at full height in 3D, weapon in hand, waiting for the [ENTER] EDIT UNIT prompt. Nothing is abstracted away: XP is a segmented bar per roster row, level is a progress line with the exact XP still owed, and even the passive-skill count is a chip on the sheet. Disclosure: the trailer was captured from a development build, a small “2 Dev 571261004” tag sits in the top bar's right corner, part of this footage's own chrome. Frame at about 1:11 in the Gears Tactics Launch Trailer - ENESRB (Steam; scene-change survivor v0_0044).

Screen inventory

  • the Barracks shell is a top tab bar, [Q] HOME / MISSIONS / BARRACKS [E], BARRACKS selected with a small red corner tick, over a dark hangar backdrop, with a player tag and settings gear at top right
  • the left ROSTER column splits the squad in two castes: GEARS [8/10] heroes (Level 2 Support Gabe Diaz, Level 2 Vanguard Sid Redburn highlighted, Level 2 Sniper Mikayla Dorn, portraits, class icons, star marks and segmented blue XP bars) over TROOPS [3/5] recruits (Harlan "Monsoon" Stevens, Issac "Blaze" Hyland, Vernon "Watchdog" Kohn), with a greyed [R] RECRUIT TROOPS row on top
  • the centre sheet is the selected unit in numbers: LEVEL 2 VANGUARD SID REDBURN, an LVL 2 bar reading 1,450 XP TO LVL 3, two chips (1 PASSIVE SKILL, CAREER STATS) and an icon stat list, HEALTH 560, ACCURACY BONUS +40%, DAMAGE 250, CRIT CHANCE 25%, CRIT DAMAGE +100%, AMMO 4, EVASION 0%
  • the right half is given to the unit himself: a full-height 3D presenter of Sid in green armour holding his heavy weapon, with a single [ENTER] EDIT UNIT prompt at bottom right, the roster reads left-to-right as list, numbers, man
