What to study

Recruitment is a master-detail ledger, and its bet is that you hire stories, not stat blocks. The left column prices five men two ways at once, a lump sum now and a wage forever (Baldur, a level-2 veteran at 1,225 crowns and 11 a day, costs nearly five times Leif), while the right pane spends its space on prose: Leif the fisherman, whose catch rotted in the water all summer, taking the coin for dangerous work. No attributes are shown anywhere on this screen; the background icon and the biography are the entire scouting report, and the game trusts them to carry the decision. The COSTS block then repeats the selected row's two numbers directly over the Hire button, so the commitment is priced at the exact moment of the click, and the header strip, crowns, provisions, tools, medicine, ammunition, and the roster at 3 of 20, frames every hire as a budget decision against the whole company's logistics. Frame at 0:20.5 in the Launch Trailer (manual extraction; the scene-change pass caught none of the town-service screens). At 0:19.5 the same screen shows Baldur selected; the Leif selection is on screen for roughly a second.

Screen inventory

  • the town-service header strip shared by every settlement screen: 2,570 crowns, 47 provisions, 40 tools, 80 medicine, 30 ammunition, and the roster standing at 3/20
  • five candidate rows, each a portrait token, a background icon, a name, and two prices, an upfront cost with a crown icon and a daily wage with a coin-purse icon: BALDUR 1,225 / 11 (with a yellow level arrow, 2), LEIF 265 / 8, RADULF 130 / 5, RAIMUND THE DEVOTED 120 / 6, RUTHARD THE GELDING 140 / 7
  • Leif's row is highlighted as the selection, with the brass hand cursor resting at the list's right edge
  • the detail pane: a larger portrait and a prose biography, Leif was content with being a fisherman until a whole summer's catch came up dead and rotten, and a tavern evening 'presented itself with the promise of coin for dangerous work'
  • the COSTS block restates the selected row's two numbers at the point of commitment, UP FRONT 265, DAILY 8, above the Hire button, with a Leave button under the panel
