What to study

This is the genre's core screen drawn with unusual honesty. Movement is not a grid of numbers but a fenced yard, cyan for yours, orange for theirs, and the cost of a move (3 AP) is written on the destination tile itself, next to the sight-line that proves the shot you are moving for actually exists (41% on the Slicer Dicer). Nothing about the turn is hidden in a tooltip: reach, price, target and odds share one picture, and the bottom bar repeats the same economy in miniature, two weapons, two AP costs, one segmented meter. Even the turn change is a single plain banner. A new player could be taught this fight from this one frame. Frame at about 0:46 in the Wasteland 3 Gameplay trailer (Steam; scene-change survivor v0_0014).

Screen inventory

  • the turn announces itself and then gets out of the way: a single YOUR TURN banner at top centre, and the floor does the explaining, a cyan outline fences exactly the ground Banshee can reach this turn, stairs and cover included, while orange lines fence the enemy's ground
  • the chosen move is drawn before it is spent: a dashed cyan path runs from Banshee's position down to the highlighted destination tile, tagged 3 AP, and a thin red sight-line from that tile to the SLICER DICER (193/193, 41% hit chance) answers the only question that matters, can I shoot from there
  • the bottom bar is the ranger in one strip: BANSHEE, armor 11, health 79/137, four more squad portraits, six ability icons, a segmented action-point meter, and two weapon cards with their real costs (73-101 damage, AP: 6, 2 rounds loaded; 32-38 damage, AP: 3, 12 rounds)
  • END TURN is a red arrow tab at lower right, shaped like the commitment it is; enemy nameplates (SLICER DICER, DOC NAILS, SHELLSHOCK) carry the same health-bar treatment as the squad's, so both sides of the fight read identically
