What to study

Wasteland 3 talks the way its world looks: no stage, no close-up, no wheel. The camera stays at the squad's working height in Ranger HQ, the speaker gets a nameplate, and the player answers from a short list of quoted topics, the hovered one boxed in light. The economy is the lesson, the first topic is a piece of base management ('We need to manage our active Rangers'), the second is curiosity about a man's past, the third is leaving, function, character and exit carried by identical plain rows, so a conversation reads as one more system in the same interface as the battles and sheets around it, not a separate cinematic mode. Frame at about 0:08 in the Wasteland 3 Gameplay trailer (Steam; scene-change survivor v0_0003).

Screen inventory

  • the conversation runs from the normal top-down HQ view: Sergei Greatski stands in Ranger HQ's war room beside the circular console while his name sits in a teal nameplate bar across the lower third, dialogue never cuts away from the room the squad is standing in
  • the player's lines are a short topic list in quotation marks, the selected topic boxed in a glowing blue outline: 'We need to manage our active Rangers.' (the doorway to squad management), 'Got a moment to talk about your past?' and 'Goodbye.', topics written as things a commander would actually say, not menu labels
  • a thin scrollbar at the right of the text block is the only hint the list can grow; there are no portraits, no dialogue wheel and no response timer, at rest, Wasteland 3 dialogue is three lines of text laid over the world
