What to study

Most RPG item cards answer one question, is it better than mine? This one answers three: what it does (damage first, in the biggest type), what it costs to use well (a Brawling requirement, and the exact penalties for ignoring it, printed in red instead of a greyed-out equip button), and what it teaches (a new Heavy Attack ability, explained on the card). Showing the failure state on the item itself turns a hard gate into a decision, a ranger two points short of Brawling can read precisely how bad the stopgap would be. The near-empty loot grid beside it keeps the theatre small: one weapon in a cave gets the full two-panel treatment, because in this game the card is the loot. Frame at about 0:27 in the Wasteland 3 Gameplay trailer (Steam; manual extraction, the nearest scene-change survivor, v0_0007 at 23.29s, is the same cave seconds earlier with the panel not yet open).

Card Grid List

Screen inventory

  • looting opens two panels over the cave floor: on the right the container itself, a 7x4 grid holding exactly one clawed gauntlet icon; on the left the full item card for whatever the cursor touches, with a LOOT ALL button under the grid for taking everything sight unseen
  • the card leads with the numbers that matter: CLAWED GAUNTLET, Lv 17 Brawling Weapon, AP: 2, and 29-44 DAMAGE in the largest type on the card, then the joke ('Now you can prove that you're the best there is at what you do.') and the gate in red, Requires 6 Brawling
  • unusually, the card prices failure instead of simply refusing the equip: a 'Failed requirement penalty' block lists HIT CHANCE: -15%, CRITICAL CHANCE: -100% and STRIKE RATE: -100% in red, above the honest stats (BASE HIT CHANCE: 90%, CRIT DAMAGE: X1.7, CRIT CHANCE: 10%, PENETRATION: 10) and PRICE: $585
  • the weapon even teaches while looted: a NEW ABILITY AVAILABLE block announces HEAVY ATTACK, 'Throw your weight around... +70% Critical Chance, but -40% Hit Chance', so a loot screen doubles as a build hint for whoever picks the gauntlet up
