What to study

Set this beside Slay the Spire's branching route map and the difference is the design statement. Monster Train's run is a descent through Hell's rings on a railway, so its map is a railway: one track, one shield-shaped train marker, one glowing next stop, and a parchment banner naming the ring, The Frozen Heart, like a station sign. There is no route to plan because the fiction allows none; the choices in this game live inside battles and shrines, not between them, and the map spends its whole budget on orientation instead (where am I, what ring is this, what am I carrying, per the unchanged top bar). A map that refuses to offer choices is still an interface decision, and here it is the honest one. Frame at about 0:22 in the Monster Train The Last Divinity trailer (Steam; manual extraction, the map is a held shot the scene-change pass crossed during a lightning transition at 0:23).

Screen inventory

  • the map is a single vertical rail: the train is drawn as a red shield marker riding one track down from a stone arch toward a glowing blue node ring, in Hell's late rings the route does not branch, and the map does not pretend otherwise
  • a parchment banner at bottom-right names the region 'The Frozen Heart'; black claw rocks ringed with blue frost cracks set the ring's terrain around the track
  • the persistent top bar carries the whole run state onto the map unchanged: Pyre 140 (40 beneath), gold 165, ember 30, a 155-over-100 shard counter, and a row of nine artifact icons
  • at the bar's right end, the two clan icons carry level counters of 10 and 9, clan progress travels with the player onto every screen, map included
