What to study

Weapon upgrading in Alyx is a terminal you stand in front of and touch. The fabricator's screen is a plain procurement list, four upgrades for the pistol, each with one price in resin (10, 15, 15, 20) and, for the row your finger is on, a one-line summary in plain words: 'Adds a laser sight for better targeting'. There are no stats to compare and no tree to plan through; the screen's only drama is at the bottom right, where the balance reads YOUR RESIN: 0 and the word INSUFFICIENT sits in red above it, the menu tells you the shopping trip is over before you have touched anything. The interface is diegetic down to its furniture (a 'CIVIL PROTECTION ANNEX' footer and a barcode, as if the Combine issued the shop), and the cursor is the player's own gravity glove, its circuit boards and wiring exposed, fingertip resting on the cost icon of the row being read. Frame at about 1:39 in the Gameplay 1 video (Steam), manually extracted at 99.0s: the pipeline's scene-change pass emitted no frame for this segment. Screen type is a judgment call, an upgrade purchase list filed under focus-tech-tree, following the Hades Mirror of Night precedent for permanent-upgrade lists.
