What to study

This is Dorfromantik's core loop in one frame: the board is a town you grew, and the objectives are flags stuck into it. Quest design here is spatial rather than textual, a 9+ over water means connect nine more water tiles near that flag, a 1+ over rail means extend the track by one, so planning means reading the map, not a quest log. The two-tile preview above the stack is the game's only hand: every decision is which of two hexes goes where, and the ghost hexes at the island's edge are the open question. It is a strategy game whose entire HUD is three numbers (two flags, one stack) floating over the thing they describe. Frame at about 3:04 in the Full Release Explanation Trailer (Steam; scene-change survivor v0_0007).

Screen inventory

  • the island is now a small town: dozens of houses with coloured roofs cluster around a church tower and a windmill, with forest, fields, a river and a rail line all grown from the same hex tiles, and pale ghost hexes still ring the edge showing where the board can expand next
  • two quest flags hang over the town in mid-air: a 9+ water flag above a lakeside temple and a 1+ rail flag above the track, demands are pinned to the landscape they concern, not listed in a panel, so the player reads goals by looking at the map
  • at bottom right the next tiles wait as two preview hexes above the stack, which reads 56: the hand is always two tiles deep, and the stack count is the run's remaining length
  • no score is visible in this framing, the camera has pulled back to the whole island, and the quest flags, not the number, are the current objective
