What to study

This is the whole game with no panel open: a green table, six verb tiles, and everything the cultist owns dealt out as cards. The design decision the frame teaches is uniformity under pressure, a location (The Ecdysis Club), a person (Poppy Lascelles), a mood (A Season of Suspicion), a currency (three metals of Spintria) and a resource (Funds, stacked 10) are the same rectangle with the same badge grammar, so the player files a life the way the game deals it. Even time is dealt onto the table rather than kept in a HUD: the Dream tile counts down 55.7s in a lozenge, and two Erudition cards have had their faces replaced by their own expiry timers, 80.4s and 2.2s, knowledge in this game literally evaporates off the table if you do not spend it. Frame at about 0:38 in PENETRATE THE HOUSE (Steam; manual extraction, the camera drifts slowly over the table here, so no scene change ever fires).

Screen inventory

  • six large verb tiles own the table's left edge in two columns: Time (orange hourglass), the cyan hand-and-eye, Study (yellow lightbulb), Explore (purple telescope), Dream (a cloud, mid-timer with a '55.7s' lozenge and ring arc) and Talk (pink lips), every action in the game is one of these six squares
  • cards keep their own clocks on the table: two Erudition cards at bottom-right are faces replaced by countdowns, '80.4s' and '2.2s', temporary cards announce their own expiry where they lie, not in a log
  • the currency row is three near-identical cards differentiated only by metal and name: 'Iron Spintria', 'Silver Spintria', 'Bronze Spintria', money is a card type, stacked with everything else
  • stacks report themselves with circled number badges on the card corner: Funds (10), Health (5), Passion (4), Reason (4), 'A Buzzing in the Brain' (3), 'A Chilly Atmosphere' (2)
  • the table's population in one glance: 'Oriflamme's Auction House', 'The Ecdysis Club', 'Way: The Wood', 'Poppy Lascelles', 'A Season of Suspicion', 'A Furtive Truth', 'Notion: Sensation', 'A Red Secret', 'A Wood-Whisper', locations, people, seasons and secrets all dealt as the same card object on one green baize
