What to study

Knucklebones, the dice duel Cult of the Lamb hides inside its cult sim, reduced to one perfectly legible board. There is no menu, no hand, no animation you need to have seen: two 3x3 grids, dice you place in columns, and the whole strategy, fill a column with matching dice to multiply its value, drop a matching die in the enemy's column to destroy theirs, is readable from the frame, because matched dice tint (blue above, gold below) and every column carries its price at the centre seam (5 / 3 / 45 against 6 / 16 / 24). Identity is handled the way the whole game handles it, as portraiture: a face, a flourished name, one number (The Lamb 46, The Goat 53), and the rolled die waiting in its tray. It is a versus screen that behaves like a board game box lid, everything in view, nothing explained twice. The trailer's caption sits over the dark surround at bottom right. Frame at about 0:52 in the Unholy Alliance Trailer (Steam), a pipeline scene-change survivor (candidates/v0_0033.png at 51.6s).

Screen inventory

  • centre, the whole game on one board: two 3x3 dice grids facing each other across a horizontal seam on a parchment strip, the upper grid's column totals (5 / 3 / 45) print along its bottom edge, the lower grid's (6 / 16 / 24) along its top edge, so both players' arithmetic meets in the middle
  • matched dice are the scoring made visible: a full column of three identical dice in the upper grid is tinted blue and worth 45, and two gold pairs glow in the lower grid, the board prices matches, not just pips, and the tint is the explanation
  • left, the player panel as a portrait card: the Lamb's face, its name in flourished serif ('The Lamb') and its running total, 46, beneath; bottom left, an ornate empty-framed tray holding the die just rolled (a 5)
  • right, the mirror panel: 'The Goat', 53, its tray empty, the asymmetry of the two trays says whose turn it is without a single prompt
